Dhaka City Metro Rail | MRT Line-6 will Open in 2019



The 1st section of the Metro Rail Line-6 from Uttara to Agargaon ​​is now visible in Dhaka city. The construction work is going on fast so that the people of the city can ride on Metro Rail this year i.e. 2019. In the first phase, the metro rail will be opened from Uttara to Agargaon via Mirpur. The capital city Dhaka will enter into the era of Metro Rail soon. And hope in the 2020, the 2nd section of MRT line-6 ​​will be fully facilitated from Agargaon to Bangladesh Bank in Motijheel.

At present there are more than Twenty million people lives in the capital city Dhaka. But in comparison to that, the advantage and ease of traveling inside the city for the civil society is particularly limited. The citizens of this mega city do not have end of suffering while making journey from one place to another.

To reduce the sufferings of the city dwellers and to save time, the government has taken initiative to bring capital city Dhaka under Metro Rail. As part of this, at least five to six MRT lines are being planned to set up in the city under the Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) project. The construction works of MRT Line-6 in the Uttara Third Phase project area, Mirpur, Pallabi, Kazipara, Sherawapara, Agargaon are going on very fast. Construction of check-boring test, construction of Viaduct, construction of main pile of nine stations in about 12 kilometers from Uttara to Agargaon was completed. The work of 493 pile caps, 209 peer heads, 75 i-guarders and 1,869 precast segment casting was completed. Now, about two and a half kilometers of Viaduct are visible in the Line-6.

Project-related people of MRT Line-6 ​​said that the project will be opened for the half movement from Uttara third phase project to Agargaon by November to December 2019. With this goal, the work of this section is going on fast. Engineers, laborers and project-related peoples are working 24 hours in the day and night due to dry season facilities.

Some span has been installed on the pillar in many places from Uttara to Agargaon of MRT Line-6. Land development work in the depot area of ​​Diabari in Uttara ended on January 31st which is nine months before the scheduled time. The concerned people are expected to complete the work of depot area within next 30th of June.

The first phase of the MRT Line-6 ​​project along with the work of the second part has also been started. From Agargaon to Farmgate, Kawran Bazar, Banglamotor, Shahbagh, Dhaka University, Press Club, Paltan and Motijheel; the fence work was done on the two sides of the road in these areas. Already the work of moving service lines in these road segments has completed. Besides, the work of the main pile has begun after completing nine test piling work.



The Metro Rail locomotive design has already been finalized. The work of replicating the replica in the Japanese factory has started. According to the project, keeping in mind the introduction of the 1st section of Metro Rail Line-6 ​​in November - December, locomotives (engines) and coaches will be brought to the country before the scheduled time. Honorable Minister Mr. Obaidul Quader has already told that the work of Metro Rail will be completed within a certain period of time. The concerned people are working hard through day and night; there is a continuous ongoing work.

About MRT Line – 6:
  • Total length of Metro Rail line-6 ​ from Uttara third phase project to Motijheel is 20.10 KM
  • The number of stations will be 16 in this 20 kilometers route
  • It will carry 60 thousand passengers on both sides per hour
  • Total 24 pairs of trains will travel from both sides
  • Each train will have 6 coaches
  • The maximum speed of the metro rail will be 100 kilometers per hour




The project was mainly about to completed from 2012 to 2024 (total project time). But on the directives of the Prime Minister, special initiative has been taken to reduce the construction period of this project by December 2020. The cost of construction of line-6 ​​is 21,985 Crore BDT. Now the people of the city are just waiting for MRT Line-6 ​​to be completed. After the completion of the project in due time, the metro rail will be started, the traffic congestion in the capital city Dhaka will be resolved a lot. A part of the city dwellers can get relief from traffic jam and other hassle.

The Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Company Ltd (DMTCL) is now advancing with a plan to create a combined network of other five metro rail routes to control over the traffic congestion of the capital city Dhaka. The initial feasibility study for construction of MRT line - 5, 4, 3 and 2 has started.


  • MRT Line-1: From Uttara Airport to the Kamalapur via Purbacha Badda route will be underground and elevated metro rail line, total length will be approximately 31.24 KM which expected to be completed by 2026.
  • MRT Line-3: On Planning Phase.
  • MRT Line-2: Start from Gabtali to Chittagong Road, total 24 KM long underground and elevated routes. Routes will be through Gabtali, Mohammadpur, Sat Masjid Road, Nilkhet, Gulistan and Motijheel.
  • MRT Line-4: MRT Line-4 will be from KAmalapur to Narayangonj with a total length of 16 KM which will be an underground route beneath the existing Kamalapur-Narayanganj railway track.
  • MRT Line-5: Another 19.60 KM long (13.60 km underground and 6 km elevated) metro rail route will be constructed from Hemayetpur to Vatara.
