Foreign Investment in Bangladesh is Increasing among all LDCs

Recently, Bangladesh has made big progress in attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). In 2018, the maximum amount of FDI came in Bangladesh and it increased also among all the LDC countries across the world. Bangladesh has the highest growth rate among all the countries in South Asia. Last year, FDI rate increased by 68 percent compared to the previous year whereas the FDI rate was 13 percent decreased in the whole world. Hope more FDIs will come in this year as per previous contract and announcement of several companies of the World.

The latest international investment report of the United Nations Trade and Development Organization, UNCTAD, shows the picture of foreign investment in Bangladesh. According to the report published on 12 June 2019, in 2018 there was $ 3600 million net FDI in Bangladesh.

Japan Tobacco has invested 1500 million dollars last year through the purchase of local tobacco company Dhaka Tobacco which has had a positive impact on the overall investment and the economic zones of public-private partnership overall. UNCTAD this year report is based on the Special Economic Zones in Bangladesh. UNCTAD evaluates more deeply the recent investments in the economic zones of the country.

The Government of Bangladesh has already taken some initiatives that are attracting investment. Infrastructure development, gas and electricity supply system has been improved. The problem of land has been resolved by establishing new economic zones across the country. Besides, laws have been relaxed to facilitate the transactions of foreign investors. Various initiatives including one stop service have been taken to facilitate easy business process.

Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) Kazi M Aminul Islam said, "Currently all the relevant related to investment in the country is now present." Infrastructure development has progressed a lot. One stop service for the investor has been started. Foreign entrepreneurs are finding the young manpower of Bangladesh as positive. Their confidence is increasing due to socioeconomic achievement. As a result, FDI is increasing. But there is still some problem due to bureaucratic complexity and old laws which needs reform. If there is a continuation of the current progress and some necessary reforms done then FDI will increase further.

According to the UNCTAD report, foreign direct investment in South Asia in 2018 was $ 5,400 Crore, which is 4 percent more than the previous year. Vast majority of this huge investment amount received by India. Last year foreign investment of India increased 6 percent to amount 4,200 crores. Although Bangladesh's total investment is low but growth rate is top in South Asia.

According to UNCTAD, last year the total FDI amount in LDCs stood at $ 2,380 Crore, which is 15 percent more than the previous year. Among the LDCs, the highest FDI came in Bangladesh. Myanmar got FDI equivalent to 360 million dollars in Bangladesh but it s 18 percent less than Myanmar's previous year's investment. Apart from attracting FDI, the top five countries in the LDCs are Ethiopia, Mozambique and Cambodia. Bangladesh is also at the top as a single company's investment.

Bangladesh is also the leading country to attract new or Greenfield investment. The report said that the United States General Electric, Japan's Mitsubishi and Summit jointly announced to invest $ 300 crore to build oil and gas terminals in Bangladesh. In addition, General Electric announced $ 300 crore investments in fossil fuel electric power in Bangladesh. China's Huadian Corporation has shown interest in investing around $ 1 billion in the same sector. In addition, General Electric last year made another $ 440 crore investment in power generation.

UNCTAD said in 2018 the FDI fell 13 percent to 1.3 trillion dollars around the Globe. After the global economic downturn this was the lowest in the last decade. But hopefully this year, FDI will increase further in some Asian and African countries. The organization thinks that special economic zones and natural resources on these continents are attracting foreign investors. FDI is coming for the developing economic zones of public-private partnership in Bangladesh. BIDA hopes that Bangladesh will receive $ 370 Crore FDI in the end of this year.

The government has constituted Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority or BEZA to speed up economic growth. Granting of setting up of 30 economic zones has been approved out of 24 is under construction. 4 economic zones are being built on the basis of international partnership. Besides, more than 60 economic zones are in the process of approval. Government planned to establish 100 economic zones across the country. There are also existing eight governments and one private Export Processing Zone - EPZ in the country. 72 percent of foreign investment has been invested in these EPZs. And 20 percent of the country's total export products are being manufactured from these factories.

Please visit the official website of UNCTAD for details about the report.

Dhaka Elevated Expressway will Open in 2021

Buses will run from Uttara Airport to Jatrabari Kutubkhali without any interruption through the Dhaka Elevated Expressway which is under construction. There will be no traffic congestion in this 20 kilometers long road way, not any traffic signals. People will be able to reach from one end of the city to the other end. This will be the benefit of Dhaka Eligible Expressway.

The Dhaka-Chittagong highway will connect to this Expressway and hope the construction will end in September 2021. This Expressway will be open for vehicular traffic from September-2021. Based on this goal, the project is progressing fast. At present in the project area, the workers and engineers are working 24 hours non-stop due to the dry season facility.

50% of the work of the first phase of this project has already been completed from Airport to Banani section. The second phase is from the Banani railway station to Moghbazar railway crossing which is expected to complete in July next year and the third or final phase will be completed in September 2021 which is from Maghbazar railway crossing to Kutubakhali in Dhaka-Chittagong Highway.

According to the government's plan, the project will be opened for transportation when the project is completed from the Kawla near Airport Railway station to Banani rail crossing and from the Banani rail crossings to the Magbazar railway crossing. At the same time, the third phase of work will continue.

The Dhaka Elevated Expressway has so far made 50% progress in the first phase and the overall progress of the project is 20%. There are total number of 1,304 piles in the expressway. Of these, 280 pile caps, 62 cross-beam constructions have been completed. Hundred percent works of 163 columns of the project is done. The remaining 84 columns were partially completed and the construction of 186 i-girders was completed. Apart from this, the work of establishing two span i-girders has already been completed.

The total cost of this project has been estimated to be 8,940 crore BD Taka. Total length of this flyover is about 20 kilometers. The route is starting from Kawla near Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport- Kuril Bishwa road- Banani- Mohakhali- Tejgaon- Maghbazar- Kamalapur- Sayedabad- Jatrabari- Kutubkhali of Dhaka-Chittagong Highway.

The project is being implemented on the basis of Public Private Partnership (PPP) basis. If the project is implemented, the traffic congestion will be reduced considerably inside Dhaka city. It will take only 20 minutes to Kutubakhali from the Airport. There will not even any traffic signals. As a result, vehicles coming from Chittagong city will not stuck in the inner streets of Dhaka city.

The passenger will be able to reach Chittagong from north part of Dhaka without facing any kind of traffic congestion. Not only that, the Dhaka Elevated Expressway will also provide regional connectivity to the Asian Highway corridor and this connectivity will be more advanced and dynamic.

It will also reduce travel costs because the fuel costs will decrease due to this expressway. The most profitable will be the time consuming during the journey. Within in a short span of time passengers will be able to travel 20 km distance. This will also accelerate the economic development of the country. Add new dimension to GDP, new horizons will be created in the field of communication in Dhaka city as well as the whole country.

Ongoing Projects to Resolve Traffic Congestion in Dhaka

The capital city Dhaka is one of the most densely populated cities not only in Bangladesh but also in the whole world. At present the population of the city is more than 17 million. More than 44 thousand people live in every square kilometer in Dhaka city. Although the capacity of existing roads is for 0.3 million vehicles but according to the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) the number of registered vehicles is 0.9 million in Dhaka.

Traffic congestion has become a part in the city. To resolve this issue many initiatives have been taken by the Government to make Dhaka city a better place. In view of this, the government has approved a revised Strategic Transport Plan (RSTP) in the FY 2014-15. It has been proposed to construct five subway rail routes, two fast bus routes and one thousand 200 kilometers new roads.

Based on the info, six elevated expressways and three ring roads are included under the road network. In the next 20 years these projects will be implemented, the total expenditure will be about BD Taka 351,000 Crore. Meanwhile some initiatives of RSTP have been implemented already.

However, many of the people of Dhaka city have seen the spheres of these ongoing projects. It is such situations that some people think that all are the work of the Metro Rail project. In fact, many projects on different routes are being implemented in Dhaka. At present following special projects are implementing in the capital city.

Metro Rail – MR Line 6:
The Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit (MRT-6) route or Metro Rail project is being implemented. Started from the Uttara third phase to Motijheel via Mirpur, Agargaon, Farmgate, Shahbag, Press Club, the total length of the MRT line will be 20 km.

Among the route first phase of 10 km from Uttara to Agargaon will be completely opened in 2021. At present the average progress of the MRT-6 is about 24.66 percent. And in the first phase, the total progress from Uttara to Agargaon is 40.58 percent.

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route:
It will take 20 minutes to reach 20.50 kilometers from the Airport Railway Station to Joydebpur Chaurasta, Gazipur using this BRT line. Work has already started under the 'Greater Dhaka Sustainable Urban Transport' project. 20 percent work is already completed. Project Implementing Authority is Road and Highways Department (RHD).

Under this project Road widening, Service roads and three kilometer drainage in Gazipur area, eight-lane Tongi Bridge and flyover will be constructed. However, the construction work of 20.50 km separate bus route was not implemented yet, it’s in first phase. 5 to 10 percent of flyovers, 68 percent of the bus depot work have been completed.

Dhaka Elevated Expressway (Flyover):
Construction of the Dhaka Elevated Expressway (Flyover) is the government's biggest project to speed up the traffic congestion in the capital which is progressing at a faster pace. This Expressway will be 26 km long from Kawla near Airport Road to Kutubakhali near Shanir Akhra on Dhaka-Chittagong highway.

The routes of the project are Shahjalal International Airport – Kuril – Banani – Mohakhali – Tejgaon – Moghbazar – Kamalapur – Sayedabad – Jatrabari - Dhaka Chittagong Highway (Kutubakhali). It will take 20 minutes to reach Kutubakhali from the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. In the first phase, the Expressway will start from the Airport to Banani and will open in this year. The length of the route will be 7.45 kilometers.

Flyover from ECB Square to Kalshi:
The construction work is going on fast from Kalshi Road from the premises of Mirpur ECB. Many people think that this may be the metro rail route. In fact, the government has taken an initiative to construct a new flyover from the ECB Chattar to Kalshi border in Mirpur, Dhaka.

Its total length will be around 844.11 meter. The road is also being expanded along with the flyover. It will improve road communication between Mirpur, Pallabi, Dhaka Cantonment, Uttara, Mohakhali and Rampura.

According to the RSTP, at present there are several development projects running in Dhaka city. The traffic congestion will not be resolved with just one metro rail. So elevated expressway, flyovers and road widening along the Metro Rail is also ongoing.

One project is related to another. The traffic congestion will be free only when all projects are completed. The government is implementing all the projects as planned. We all are waiting to see our new Dhaka.

Thanks.
