MRT Line 5 in Dhaka City from Hemayetpur to Vatara



After a few rounds of survey and feasibility study, the route of another Metro Rail project in Dhaka city MRT-5 has been finalized. The proposed route for new MRT Line-5 is Hemayetpur- Boliarpur- Madhumati- Aminbazar- Gabtali- Darussalam- Mirpur 1- Mirpur 10- Mirpur 14- Kachkhet- Banani- Gulshan 2- Natun Bazar- Vatara.

As per the NEWS the Roads and Highways Department of the Bangladesh Government has finalized the created Development Project Proposal (DPP) containing 395 pages including the estimated time duration of the project to be completed and also the expenditure of the MRT Line-5.

The final DPP for this new project has already been sent to the planning commission. The DPP will be presented at the meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) after approval of the Project Evaluation Committee (PEC) meeting.

The total expenditure on execution of MRT Line-5 under the Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project (DMTDP) has been estimated at BD Taka 41,261 crore 51 lac. Japan-based investment company Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will provide BD Taka 30,756 crore 46 lac as loan. The whole project will be completed from July 2019 to December 2028.

From Hemayetpur Savar via Gabtali to Vatara, the MRT-5 route will have length of 20 kilometers. Among the 20 km, 13.5 kilometer will be subway route and the remaining 6.5 kilometer will be elevated route. Together the subway and elevated (flyover) will be the metro rail line 5. In addition to implementing the project, land acquisition will be start project this year.

As per the information, the Road Transport and Highways Department (RHD) has sent a proposal for allocation of BD Taka 1000 crore for land acquisition under the Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project (DMTDP) to implement the new metro rail route (MRT-5) from Hemayetpur to Bhatara.

Stations of MRT Line 5: There will b total 14 number of stations for the proposed MRT-5 (Northern Route). Nine stations will be underground (subway stations) and the remaining five stations will be on the ground (elevated).



The proposed subway stations in 13.5 KM long route:
  • Hemayetpur
  • Boliaipur
  • Madhumati / Bilamalia
  • Aminbazar
  • Gabtali
  • Darussalam Mirpur
  • Mirpur-1
  • Mirpur-10
  • Mirpur-14

Elevated / Flying stations in 6.5 KM long route:
  • Kachukhet
  • Banani
  • Gulshan-2
  • Natun Bazar
  • Vatara

According to the leaflet provided by Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA): “A 20-year strategic transport plan (STP) in 2005 was taken. In 2016, the STP was revised to adjust to prevailing transport needs. Under the revised STP (RSTP), five 5 mass rapid transit (MRT) and two bus rapid transit (BRT) lines were proposed, and MRT Line and BRT Line 3 have been constructing. Following the 2 line, MRT Line 1 and Line 5 are the next priority projects of the Bangladesh government”.


At present the construction work of MRT Line 6 (from Uttara to Motijheel via Mirpur) is going on full swing. Beside, after implementation of MRT-5 the traffic congestion around Dhaka city will become more tolerable. It will be possible to provide a modern and safe transit system for the residents of the Mega City Dhaka. To meet the transportation demand a high-quality mass rapid transit system is needed. The project will contribute directly to the country's GDP growth.
