Two Boeing Dreamliner 787-9 Aircraft will be Adding in Biman Fleet

The fourth Dreamliner 787-8 ‘Rajhansa’ has been added and inaugurated on 17 Sept 2019 on the Biman Bangladesh Airlines fleet. Since the inauguration of the 'Rajhansa', the government has planned to add two more Boeing Dreamliner 787-9 to the Bangladesh Airlines - Biman.

The Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina herself expressed interest in buying these new two Boeing. Later the Biman has decided to buy two new Boeing Dreamliner 787-9 which is larger in size and capacity than 787-8 model. Biman was negotiated with the Boeing Company for over a month after that. Biman may be getting a chance to buy every 787-9 Dreamliners at half the current market price which could be around US$ 150 million. These new two 787-9 Dreamliner may be added in Biman fleet in December this year.

There are currently 16 aircraft in the Biman fleet. Of these, the number own aircraft on Biman is 10, the rest of the aircrafts are of leases. All of the own aircrafts were purchased from Boeing Company. Of these, four are Dreamliners 787-8, four are 777-300 ER and rest two are 737-800. If two new 787-9 aircraft are purchased, then the total number of own aircraft in Biman will be 12. In addition next year three new Dash-8 aircrafts from Canada will be adding.

According to various websites on the internet, the current market price of a Boeing Dreamliner 787-9 aircraft is US$ 292.5 million (around 2,480 Crore BD Taka). Two 787-9 aircraft will cost US$ 585 million (around 4,960 Crore BD Taka).

Recently the Chinese ‘Hainan Airlines’ which is one of top China's civilian airlines, canceled their deal with Boeing. In that context, Boeing offered to sell two Dreamliners at low prices. The Prime Minister expressed interest in buying these two Dreamliners and the Biman began negotiating with Boeing to buy these two brand new 787-9 Dreamliner.

A Dreamliner 787-9 model aircraft cost around US $ 300 million. Boeing began discussing prices and accessories in the first week of October with Biman. The Boeing Company proposed US$ 155 million for each aircraft. The Biman offered their price at $ 135 million. Then Boeing reduced the price by $ 150 million for each Dreamliner. Despite this the bargaining between the two sides continued. The recent decision to buy Dreamliner for less than US $ 150 million has been finalized.

The Boeing Company will provide an additional engine. As per the information, at a meeting of the board of directors of Biman on 23-10-2019, it was unanimously decided to buy two 787-9 Dreamliners. Very soon a state-owned bank will finance for the purchase of these aircrafts. And the Biman will start paying the Boeing Company this month.

However, two planes will arrive within this year. As part of the purchase of Dreamliner 787-9, a team from Biman will soon head to Boeing's office in Seattle, United States. The Boeing provided an additional engine with the previous four 787-8 Dreamliners. Boeing is giving an additional engine with the two new 787-9 Dreamliner. The engines are made by General Aviation, with the previous four Dreamliners 787-8.

The Boeing only manufactures the body itself. Accessories including engines are purchased from other companies. For example, Boeing adds the General Motors / Aviation or Rolls-Royce engines to their aircraft. General Motors has better engine quality than Rolls-Royce. In addition, seat covers or other machinery will be purchased from different companies, the color value, the interior decoration will be made on a design basis. The price of these airplanes is less. Boeing has a separate catalog for everything.

The Boeing Company is developed three models of Dreamliner 787. Technical Specifications of these popular models are as follows:

Outer Ring Road Project around Dhaka City

The government has decided to construct an outer ring road (circular or roundabout road) around the capital city Dhaka to reduce traffic congestion in and around the city. This ring road will ease the travel of all the surrounding districts with Dhaka. The road will directly connected with the Dhaka - Chittagong highway and the under construction approach road of the Padma Bridge Dhaka - Mawa highway.

This circular road will reduce traffic congestion in Dhaka, and on the other hand, the communication to the neighboring districts with Dhaka will be easier and time consuming. Using this road, passengers will be able to travel to other districts without entering to Dhaka city. The cyclical road will play a more effective role for freight trucks than passenger buses.

Meanwhile, the project has been approved by the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridge in the Committee on Economic Affairs recently. The project is expected to begin January 2020 and it is expected to be completed by December 2023.

Small Details about the Dhaka City outer Ring Road:
  • Length of the ring road will be 134 km.
  • In the first phase total new 48 km long road will be constructed.
  • The estimated cost is BD Taka 10,200 Crore.
  • According to the proposal, three different roads -18km from Hemayetpur to Kalakandi, 18km from Kalakandi to third Shitalakhya bridge and 12km from third Shitalakhya bridge to Madanpur will be constructed.
  • Rest 84 kilometer existing road will be up-graded.
  • The project will be implemented on a G2G, Public-Private Partnership (PPP) basis.
  • The government initially selected Japan as a project implementer and financier. However, Japan can take another country or company as a co-financier next time.

Dhaka city Ring Road Routes:
According to the preliminary survey, the alignment of the proposed outer ring road has been modified. The revised route will connect the Padma Bridge approach road to Hemayetpur (Dhaka-Aricha Highway) to Kalakandi (Dhaka-Mawa Highway). This will be connecting the Dhaka-Chittagong highway to Madanpur-Bhulta through the approach road of the third Shitalakshya Bridge. And also connect the Dhaka Bypass to Kadda (Gazipur) to Baipail (Dhaka EPZ) to Hemayetpur (Dhaka-Aricha Highway).

Ring road will be constructed so that passenger buses, trucks, private cars etc which can easily cross Dhaka and enter the neighboring district or upazila city. The population of Dhaka city is constantly increasing. Dhaka has become a mega metropolitan city due to the heavy pressure of traffic in the north-south and east-west side.

During the current government period, various projects have been implemented and some are implanting in Dhaka City to cope with the increasing pressure of traffic. If this project is implemented, the transport vehicles will be able to drive from east to west and north to south without entering Dhaka city.

A large section of Dhaka travelers will be able to travel very easily and in a short time using the Outer Ring Road. As a result, the traffic in the inner city of Dhaka will be greatly reduced and the existing traffic load will be diverted towards the ring road. Travelers can travel safely from any area of Dhaka city to another area using Inner Ring Road through Outer Ring Road.

Bogra - Natore Highway Widening Project Approved

The existing Bogra – Natore road is 18 feet wide. Construction work of widening this highway to 34 feet will be start soon. Recently the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved the project at a cost of BD Taka 700 Crore. The existing road is going to be transformed into a real highway by increasing its width.

The Natore-Bogra highway (N502) is one of the important northern gateways. The Bogra-Natore road has long been recognized as a highway in the paper-pen even after the lack of wideness. The minimum standard width of highway in the country is 24 feet. But the width of the Bogra-Natore road is only 18 feet. However, this road is recognizing as a highway only officially due to its importance.

At present, for lower wideness, freight trucks and big buses facing problems while driving on this road. Two large buses or trucks cannot cross at the same time. During crossing one vehicle have to give a side down the road to the ground. During the monsoon the soil becomes soft and as a result the wheels cannot be moved.

For such issues, there was a serious disruption to the traffic on this road. Sometimes even light vehicles cannot move. Lots of road accidents happening all the time. Apart from this, all types of small vehicles including battery operated auto rickshaws, vans, CNG operated auto rickshaw, motorcycles and micro runs on this road. The number of vehicles on this highway is increasing day by day. The 60 km long road carries about 12,000 vehicles small and large every day.

As per information, the widening of this project is now awaiting the issuance of a government order (GO) following the approval of ECNEC. When the order is issued, the task of calling the tender will begin after the appointment of the project manager. The main road will be widened from 18 feet to 24 feet and 5 feet pavement work will be done on both sides so that light vehicles can move smoothly.
