U Loops in Dhaka City to Reduce Traffic Congestion

Dhaka is one of the most densely populated mega cities in the world. Anisul Haque, the late mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), had undertaken a project to construct eleven U-Turn between Satarasta (Tjgaon) to Uttara road to reduce the traffic congestion in the capital city Dhaka. But after his death, the project closed due to some land related problems of the Roads and Highways Department. At last the project started again with a compensation of Tk 5.80 Crore to Roads and Highways Department.

Mr. Atiqul Islam, present mayor of DNCC said that, recently after launch of two new U-Turn in Uttara area, the traffic problems have become tolerable and we have decided to start this project for the benefit of the people. Another U-turn is underway in the Kawla area near Khilkhet. Hopefully the construction work will complete within a month.

The former Mayor Anisul Haque planned to construct 11 U-Turn / U-Loop from Satarasta to Uttara road. Implementation of the project required 31.25 bigha land of Roads and Highway Department, 1.61 bigha land of Bangladesh Railway and 1.83 bigha land of Civil Aviation. The late mayor held several rounds of meetings with these organizations.

Of these, RHD have the largest amount of land. The Department of Roads and Highways allowed the use of 31.25 bigha land at no cost to the Mayor. But after his death, RHD stopped working for the project. The department demanded money for the required land, as a result the project cost increased.

On July 2018, RHD agreed to give land for the project, seeking compensation of Tk. 5.80 Crore adding the compensation to the project expenditure. The revised Development Project Proposal (DPP) was sent to the Planning Commission from the Ministry of Local Government on October last year.

Under this project, SM Construction is constructing all the U turns. The construction work of these u-turns will be completed in two phases. From first phases two u-turn already opened, another will opened in next month. The overall work progress is around 70 percent.

Satrasta to Uttara is one of the busiest roads in the capital. There are traffic jams on this road all the time. The U-Turns are being built based on the Turning Yard theory. In these u-turn, the vehicles will be able to rotate without any signal. And the biggest advantage is that, vehicles do not have to stand behind any other vehicle, even it does not have to slow down for any traffic signal. Passengers will enjoy traffic-free roads at a very low cost and without any hassle.
