Rupsha Railway Bridge in Khulna-Mongla Rail Route


Construction work of the much-anticipated Khulna-Mongla railway is progressing rapidly. Under the project, the filling up of soil on the 20 km long route in Khulna section of the railway has already been completed. Soil filling work is underway on another 40 km route in Bagerhat section. After completion of soil work the railway slipper and other work will be start.

For this rail line project, around 10,851 metric tons of UIC rail section has been brought from India. Besides, the construction of the 5.13 km long Rupsa Rail Bridge is ongoing full swing. The Mongla – Khulna Rupsha Railway Bridge is now visible on the River. Small details of the construction work update as on July 2019 at the site is:
  • Total length of the broad gauge railway route between Fultola, Khulna to Mongla, Bagerhat will be around 64.75 kilometers.
  • Already piling work of 877 piles has been completed.
  • From total 136 pile caps of viaduct, 87 have been completed.
  • Around 60 pier and 20 pier cap work also completed.
  • The 12th guarder placed between the 46th and 47th pillar in June 2019.
  • Already 73 guarders (each 32.45 meter in length) among total 143 guarders are now at the construction site.
  • Total 31 bridges and 112 culverts will be constructed in this 64.75 long route.


Construction work of eight station buildings from Khulna to Mongla has also started. The construction work is ongoing fast. After completion of this railway, the rail link will be established from Mongla to Panchagarh in northern part of the country and to Shiliguri of India via Banglabandha land port. The long-dreamed Mongla Port will be fully operational for the communications development in the region. Khulna will find its lost industrial remarks.

Construction workers at Rupsa railway bridge site are very busy. They are working through day and night in the both side of the river. Piles are standing up one after another at the river basin. Overall 50 percent construction work of the whole railway project has been completed especially in Khulna district area.

The construction of the Fultola / Phultala Railway Station has been completed. At present, infrastructure works of Aranghata and Mohammad Nagar stations are ongoing. Land acquisition for approach road for four stations in Bagerhat area has done.


The Bangladesh Railway minister Nurul Islam Sujan visited the site on 4th July 2019 and after the inspection of railway construction in Khulna and Mongla said that the government is building a special rail line from Khulna to Mongla easier transportation and to increase the handling capacity of Mongla Port. Khulna-Mongla railway line will be operational by 2022.

Beside passengers, goods will be transported through this broad gauge railway. The minister also said if direct rail link between Khulna to Siliguri in India via Panchagarh and Banglabandha is created, then the rail connectivity with India, Nepal and Bhutan will increase which will open more business opportunities for the country.

At the same time, users of Mongla Port will increase. Based on the information’s of Bangladesh Railway, the project is being implemented at a cost of more than 3,850 Crore Taka which is jointly financing by the Government of Bangladesh and India. The primary aspect of this project is to expand trade and cooperation with all the SAARC countries.





Economists of Bangladesh are saying that the optimism created in Khulna region’s trade and commerce is for the construction of Khulna-Mongla Railway and Padma Bridge. Mongla will be the center of interconnection with India and transit of Nepal-Bhutan if communication system is developed. The trade and investment will increase among India, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. The lost linkage with the capital city Dhaka will be restored.
