U Loops in Dhaka City to Reduce Traffic Congestion

Dhaka is one of the most densely populated mega cities in the world. Anisul Haque, the late mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), had undertaken a project to construct eleven U-Turn between Satarasta (Tjgaon) to Uttara road to reduce the traffic congestion in the capital city Dhaka. But after his death, the project closed due to some land related problems of the Roads and Highways Department. At last the project started again with a compensation of Tk 5.80 Crore to Roads and Highways Department.
  • Satrasta (Tejgaon)
  • In front of Kohinoor Chemical Co Ltd in Tejgaon
  • Mohakhali bus terminal
  • Mohakhali flyover
  • Chairman Bari
  • Kakoli rail station
  • Near Army Golf Club in Banani
  • Kawla between Uttara and Khilkhet
  • Near RAB 1 office in Uttara
  • Jasimuddin Road uttara
  • Abdullahpur in Uttara

Mr. Atiqul Islam, present mayor of DNCC said that, recently after launch of two new U-Turn in Uttara area, the traffic problems have become tolerable and we have decided to start this project for the benefit of the people. Another U-turn is underway in the Kawla area near Khilkhet. Hopefully the construction work will complete within a month.

The former Mayor Anisul Haque planned to construct 11 U-Turn / U-Loop from Satarasta to Uttara road. Implementation of the project required 31.25 bigha land of Roads and Highway Department, 1.61 bigha land of Bangladesh Railway and 1.83 bigha land of Civil Aviation. The late mayor held several rounds of meetings with these organizations.

Of these, RHD have the largest amount of land. The Department of Roads and Highways allowed the use of 31.25 bigha land at no cost to the Mayor. But after his death, RHD stopped working for the project. The department demanded money for the required land, as a result the project cost increased.

On July 2018, RHD agreed to give land for the project, seeking compensation of Tk. 5.80 Crore adding the compensation to the project expenditure. The revised Development Project Proposal (DPP) was sent to the Planning Commission from the Ministry of Local Government on October last year.

Under this project, SM Construction is constructing all the U turns. The construction work of these u-turns will be completed in two phases. From first phases two u-turn already opened, another will opened in next month. The overall work progress is around 70 percent.

Satrasta to Uttara is one of the busiest roads in the capital. There are traffic jams on this road all the time. The U-Turns are being built based on the Turning Yard theory. In these u-turn, the vehicles will be able to rotate without any signal. And the biggest advantage is that, vehicles do not have to stand behind any other vehicle, even it does not have to slow down for any traffic signal. Passengers will enjoy traffic-free roads at a very low cost and without any hassle.

BMW and Mercedes Benz cars will manufacture or assemble in Bangladesh. The Finance Minister of the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh AHM Mustafa Kamal said that Germany has proposed to assemble BMW and Mercedes Benz cars in Bangladesh. Both of the companies already assemble cars in Thailand through a progressive production system. Now they want to start the same assembling in Bangladesh.

They will make some spare parts of BMW and Mercedes Benz here in Bangladesh and some spare parts will bring from overseas. Later cars will be assembled here. The company representatives will meet the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina regarding this issue and after discussion, next steps will be taken. The finance minister said it was a very good proposal for development of the country. Because if these companies start car assembling or manufacturing here then we don't have to import expensive cars from abroad anymore. Another very good suggestion is that they have promised that they will assist us in ensuring that our GSP benefits are not terminated.

A high-level business delegation from Germany is currently staying in Dhaka for a five-day visit to explore the potential of trade and commerce in Bangladesh. The Finance Minister also said that our relations with Germany are very well known. They have been investing in our country for a long time. Right now they are proposing us that they want to use our jute industry in a big way which is one of our major export earnings.

And inside all the car manufacturer companies in Germany, there are many uses for jute. As with most cars in Germany, jute is used in almost all. The German Asia-Pacific Business Association along with the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry arranged the visit to the German business delegation. The team comprises of business representatives involved in the textile, furniture, shipping, eco-technology, banking and tourism sectors etc.

Bangladesh Tourism Sector | 5 Steps Improvements

Bangladesh has made great achievement in tourism sectors through development of security, infrastructure and communication of the country. In the last two years tourism sector of Bangladesh has risen by five steps globally. In 2017 the global position was 125th and this year the position has become 120th.

However, Bangladesh is still far behind in the global average index. This image has appeared in the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2019 of the World Economic Forum (WEF). The number of tourist arrival around the world is increasing every year. In 2018 more than 1.4 billion tourists arrived worldwide.

According to the report, total 140 countries have been ranked based on 90 criteria including ports and aviation infrastructure, security, culture, accommodation, financial quality and stable travel opportunities etc. In this, Bangladesh has made the most progress in security in the Asia-Pacific area through regional analysis. Bangladesh has ranked 105th in this index from the previous position 123rd. With improved on security, Bangladesh will be now very convenient for international tourists.

Spain has availed the top position. From second to tenth places have been acquired by France, Germany, Japan, United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Italy, Canada and Switzerland.

The report Says,
"Asia-Pacific is the second-most competitive region in terms of T&T. Japan (4th) leads the region in overall score, while Bangladesh (120th) had the greatest improvement. The region boasts the best combination of natural and cultural resources, including the highest regional performance for the Cultural Resources and Business Travel sub-index."
According to the report:
  • Bangladesh has moved to 111th from position 116th in the grounding of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
  • In Travel and tourism priorities it has moved to position 121st from 127th.
  • In the costing competition Bangladesh has moved to position 85th from previous position 89th
  • In the land and port infrastructure facilities it has moved to 60th from position 74th.
  • In environment safety Bangladesh has moved to position 116th from 128th.

The report said that Bangladesh is one of the countries that achieved some greatest improvements in travel and tourism potential. But as a whole the country is still far behind. This proves that Bangladesh has great potential and attraction for tourists in this sector. Bangladesh has immense opportunities especially in natural and cultural tourism. Due to this, the number of foreign tourists in Bangladesh is expected to increase rapidly, which is indicating the improvement of tourism sector in the country.

The report also highlighted some shortages in Bangladesh's tourism success. It said that in the International openness Bangladesh has slipped from position 104th to 114th. This has happened due to the increments for visa requirements. In addition, Bangladesh is far behind the global average in tourist services infrastructure. The bureaucratic complexity must also be reduced.

The report recommends utilizing natural resources to move forward the tourism sectors of Bangladesh. The natural tourism is threatened due to relaxation of laws in the protection of the environment. Deadly pollution is reducing the overall attractiveness of Bangladesh. Besides, water purification system is not sufficient.

Of the SAARC countries in the list, India is ranked 34th, Sri Lanka 77th, Nepal 102nd, Bangladesh 120th and Pakistan 121st.

In this year's World Economic Forum discussions, four aspects of tourism sectors have gained importance. These are natural and cultural resources, aviation infrastructure, national travel and tourism policies and proper environment from security to labor market hygiene etc.

About BORI | Bangladesh Oceanographic Research Institute

Bangladesh Oceanographic Research Institute (BORI) is the first and only national institution on Bangladesh that will be able to play an important role ensuring the development and utilization of the country's maritime resources and plays a leading role in the study of marine science. In the wake of Bangladesh's victory in the maritime boundary case with Myanmar on 18 March 2012 and India on 7 July 2014, Bangladesh has acquired 1,18,813 sq km ocean area, a special economic zone of 200 nautical miles, continent from Chittagong coast to 345 nautical miles.

If you can ensure the proper utilization of the resources of this area which is almost equal to Bangladesh's total land area, Bangladesh's economy will move at a rapid pace. Given the immense potential for the development of tourism, including the establishment of deep sea ports, development of coastal management, mineral resources and proper utilization of sea resources, the interest of the international community towards the sea-based economy (Blue Economy) of Bangladesh is increasing.

The potential of this newly-emerged sector in the country is limitless. For this reason, Bangladesh Oceanographic Research Institute (BORI) will be able to play an important role in the study of maritime affairs and the creation of skilled manpower. The institute will work to conduct all activities as a focal point of Bangladesh at the national and international level on maritime affairs. The Bangladesh Oceanographic Research Institute will assist in conducting its own research, as well as the research work of other domestic foreign bodies, colleges and universities.

Establishment History:
  • Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman took the initiative in 1973 to establish a maritime research institute in order to enrich the country's economy and reduce poverty in the country by collecting and conserving valuable resources of the Bay of Bengal. But after the brutal and tragic massacre of Bangabandhu in 1975, the initiative ceased.
