In November 2010 the Government of the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh officially instituted the Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority (BEZA) under the Bangladesh Economic Zones Act, 2010. The BEZA is directly attached with the office of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. The office is mandated to establish, license, operate, manage and control special economic zones in the country. As per the info provided on the official web portal, the BEZA is governed by three-level management structures. These are Governing Board, Executive Board and BEZA Office/Secretariat.
Some of the principal industries sectors and exports of Bangladesh are Ready Made Garments (RMG), Garment Accessories, Pharmaceuticals, Cements, Leather & Leather goods, Chemicals, Jute & Jute products, Newsprint, Fertilizers, Sugar, Paper, Ship building, Frozen foods (shrimps), Tea, Ceramic, Home textile & fabrics, Chemical product, Light engineering products including bi-cycle etc. The aim is to establish special economic zones is to boost and diversification of industry sector, production, employment and export across the country make an express economic growth.
The Government is to establish 100 or more special economic zones across the country. The updated list on the BEZA website says, there are 55 Government-Owned and 11 private sites have already been listed to establish. See the list below, for latest information please visit the website.
