Bangladesh is a Basket of Food | Not a Bottomless Basket!

Dear readers,

How are you today ?

Few Newspapers today published a news headline that the US Ambassador Dan W Mozena, on Wednesday, 16th January, 2013 in a programme, Mozena criticized the former US secretary of state Henry Kissinger’s ‘insulting terming’ of Bangladesh as a basket case. Mozena was speaking at a workshop on Food Security organized by the USAID at a hotel in Dhaka city.

He redefined that at present Bangladesh is “a country with food revolution”.

Henry Kissinger came up with a negative term around three decades ago, when Bangladesh was reeling from ruins left by the liberation war. In the year 1971, our country has become Independent and we earned our freedom in nine months fighting against the Pakistani army. Many years ago a famous person in the US history, the ex-foreign ministry of the USA, Henry Kissinger used this insulting term when he talked about Bangladesh and compared the country with a “Bottomless Basket”.

Mr. Mozena said that the remark is belied by the fact that the basket is now filled with crops. He also said that that he believes, Bangladesh will gain food autarky within the next one decade. Bangladesh is now a ‘Basket of Food’ and not a “Bottomless Basket”, by dint of millions of hardworking farmers in the country, he observed.

Thanks,
